“MANNA is thrilled to win the NRG Gives vote! We are so thankful for the support the community has shown us through this process and are excited to use the funds to cook and deliver nearly 26,000 more meals to our neighbors suffering from illness,” said Sue Daugherty, CEO of MANNA.

Two additional nonprofits, Gift of Life Family House and Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, received $10,000 and $5,000 donations, respectively, based on public vote total. More than 1,000,000 votes were cast in all.

Introduced in 2016, the NRG Gives program is the company’s new charitable-giving initiative designed to empower people to help support the Pennsylvania nonprofits. Through this program, NRG employees nominate and the public at large votes for the organization of their choice.

The three finalists in this round were:

  • MANNA: Located in Philadelphia, MANNA was founded to support community members suffering critical illnesses with the nourishment and nutritional support they need during medical crises.
  • Gift of Life Family House: Serving the eastern half of Pennsylvania, Gift of Life Family House works to coordinate life-saving and life-enhancing transplants for those in need.
  • Community Foundation for the Alleghenies: Committed to improving the community, this organization helps support causes from education and community development to the environment, and everything in between.

“We are ecstatic with the level of participation we saw throughout this contest with the different communities,” said Mike Starck, general manager, NRG. “It was important for us to include the local communities to help decide where the donations should go. We look forward to taking this initiative further in 2017.”
